When soils dry out, their hydraulic conductivity decreases, which generates more negative tension in transpiring plants. In this review, we demonstrate that plants adapt their stomatal conductance to adapt to the decreasing soil hydraulic conductivity. With a simple model, we show how plant and soil:root conductances evolve to control plant transpiration rate.
